Most of the world is on lock down at the moment due to Coronavirus that quickly spread from Wuhan to almost every part of the world. In Slovenia government declared epidemic on Thursday, March 12 and decided to close down schools, kindergartens, public transport and basically just put a stop to public life from Monday, March 16 until Sunday, March 29 (for now) to slow down spreading of the virus. People all over the world are advised to stay in as much as possible and avoid social contacts, which brings us to the question:
What to do when you are not allowed to leave your home?
Well, if you are one of those people who would choose Netflix and popcorn in bed over partying on Friday night, you probably already feel like you’ve seen all the movies, all the series, everything and the quarantine has just started. I put together a list of movies, series, some from Netflix, some from other places, that are not your typical movie & series list.
SERIES
Better than Us
Russian science fiction-drama-action series on Netflix in a world where robots are as common as smartphones, except one that is a bit different and a lot more special.Β
The Sniffer
Another Russian (crime) series found on Netflix, with the same lead actor as in the previous one. We had Mentalist, Castle, Lucifer (also found on Netflix) all investigating crimes using their special skills, here our main character uses his nose and exceptional sense of smell to bring justice. At times a bit silly (as all crime series) but, hey, you need to kill the time.
Sex Education
Netflix series you would wish existed when you were teen. It is about teens tackling real life sex and relationship problems they face in such a unique way. What I loved about the series the most is the aesthetics: it is such an amazing mixture of past and present, clothes from your mother’s time and modern technology, stunning nature and while the accent and the story tells you its set in UK, you sometimes feel strong American influences. You will certainly find solutions to your own sexual and relationship problems, while it will also leave you confused about the place and timing of the series.
The Peaky Blinders
Currently on my watch list: Netflix series about a gang that rules Birmingham after World War I, that will so quickly suck you in, you will be in season 3 before you know it. And the music is just the best!
Most Beautiful Thing
Brazilian Netflix period drama series that show how resilient women can be, while also showing you the beauty of Rio and some great bossa nova music.
Keeping up Appearances
An old British sitcom with title that says it all. I found this one while watching videos on Facebook and was quickly hooked on it. It is super funny and Patricia Routledge does an amazing job portraying snobbish Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced Bouquet) where she is annoying and adorable at the same time.

Killing Eve
Killing Eve is an remarkable series where lives of two women dangerously intertwine. At the first look lives of these two women couldn’t be more different, with one being security operative and other assassin, you will slowly start to see how very similar they actually are. Also, fashion is amazing!
His Dark Materials
If you’ve read the books and watched the movie (which is probably one of the worst book-to-movie adaptations of all times) this HBO series is a lot more like books.
You
Any fans of Dan from Gossip Girl here? Penn Badgley’s new role in psychological thriller You will make you love and hate him all over again. It’s one of those series where characters are not black or white but all shades of grey.
MOVIES
The Quake
Norwegian disaster movie, because not all disasters happen in US.
Serial Bad Weddings
French comedy that tackles topics of race and religion in a refreshing and funny way. Especially when two stubborn families have to find common ground. And I just found out there is sequel!
With Open Arms
Another great French comedy by the same director and with same lead actor that focuses on difficulty of living open-minded life and being accepting of others, when we are put in a situation where our preaching needs to turn into doing.
Kara Bela
Turkish comedy about what happens when you just let go. On our way to Bali a kind person sitting in front of us was watching that movie and it looked super funny, even without subtitles, so of course I had to find it and watch it myself with subtitles. I hope you will be able to find it somewhere, and if not then you should remember to look for it while flying Turkish airline. π
Land of Mine
Danish-German war movie, that will certainly make you cry. It focuses on the aftermath of the World War II, that is often overlooked, but heartbreaking.
Big Game
A classic Hollywood movie on saving the president, but this time by a young boy on a quest to become a man in the woods of Finland.
On the Basis of Sex
Biographical drama of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, that fought for equal rights for women, by working the case where a man was unfairly discriminated against on the basis of sex.
The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared
When your whole life has been one big adventure it’s hard to stay put and just wait to die. A story of 100-year-old man who embarks on a new adventure that takes him to strange places, weird situations and shows us that we are never too old for something great.
Harry Potter marathon
Because you can never go wrong with Harry Potter…

Hope you will be able to find something to your liking and if I remember some other movie or great series I will certainly add it to this list.
What are you watching right now?
Pin it for later!
I want to start Peaky blinders:)

Ireland is pretty much the same as Slovakia, the schools, pubs, restaurants and all the public spaces are closed down yet we are still able to go outside and don’t need special permission as our friends in Madrid. Stay safe and positive. We are all learning to adapt to new circumstances and I hope it’s only temporary. Have a good day π Aiva xxx

I really hope this situation will resolve soon and we can ho back to normal, although there are some positive sides to this as well – nature will certainly recover during this time. Stay safe and have a lovely day.

This sounds like a great list of series and movies to watch! I really enjoyed the first series of Sex Education and thought it was really funny, I’m still yet to watch the 2nd series, thanks for the reminder. I also remember Keeping Up Appearances, it used to have it on a video when I was younger, ahh the nostalgia! Thanks for sharing your list! β€ xx

We just watched The Stranger which was wonderful – a great thriller. I’ll take a look at Sex Education as it seems to be a favourite among loads of people.

I can imagine, they are very international and some will probably be hard to find, but they are really great. Hope you will love them. Yes, these 3 series are the best, together with You, which I just remembered and put it on the list as well. π

I started binging You, but then we moved a couple of weeks ago and I haven’t carried on since. Definitely need to, it’s creepy as heck though! His Dark Materials is soooo good, I’m glad they’ve finally given it justice! The books are some of my favourites. Killing Eve and Peaky Blinders are on my list to watch at the moment, so they may be next. π

I was so excited when I learned they will make series out of His Dark Materials. The movie was so so bad, if they ever want to continue they need to reshoot the first one as well, there is just no way they can continue from there. I am sure you will enjoy Killing Eve if you liked You. Its also quite creepy.
